Course objectives
At the end of this course the students should be able to be acquainted with: • the origin of the imperial cult • the related cult of Dea Roma • the development of the imperial cult, respectively, in the Western and in the Eastern provinces • the typologies of the buildings of the imperial cult • the image strategy in the imperial cult • the main imperial priesthoods

  • Subjects of the lessons (twelve 2-hour lessons):
  • 1. Origins of the Imperial Cult - Part One
  • 2. The Birth of Imperial Cult under Augustus
  • 3. The beginning: the "Aula del Colosso" in the Forum Augusti at Rome; The Case of Pompeii
  • 4. The Julio-Claudians; Genius in the state cult
  • 5. Aphrodisias, Sebasteion
  • 6. The Temple of Rome and Augustus in the Old Forum at Leptis Magna and its statuary cycle
  • 7. The Flavians; The Templum gentis Flaviae at Rome
  • 8. Hadrian, Trajan; All the nations around the emperor: personifications of subdued peoples and tribes in the monuments of the Imperial cult
  • 9. Athens; Ancyra; Miletus; a westerm imperial altar: Lugdunum
  • 10. The Antonines, The Partherdenkmal at Ephesus Kaisersaelen
  • 11. Kaisersaalen; The priests of the Imperial cult and their insignia
  • 12. The last monuments: The Severans
