Course objectives
The main content of the course are selected themes of the ancient Greek literature, that have been explored recently and could not be explained in the courses History of the Classical Literature I-IV due to the shortage of time.
At the end of this course, students have a thorough knowledge of the selected topics of the ancient Greek literature.
Syllabus
  • The course in this term will consist mainly of the lectures of visiting professors. The lectures will have the following schedule: - 10. 3. since 12. 30 Irena Radová: Ancient hymns I - 24. 3. since 12. 30 Irena Radová: Ancient hymns II - 7.–10. 4. (the lecture will take place probably on the 8. 4. at 9. 30) prof. Ewen Bowie: Marcus Aurelius, poets and sophists: friends or foes? - 7.–10. 4.: (the lecture will take place probably on the 9. 4. at 10.50) prof. Lucia Athanassaki: Talking thalassocracy in 5th century Athens: from Bacchylides 17 to Euripides' Troades - 21. 4. 10. 3. since 12. 30 Irena Radová: Ancient hymns III - 5. 5. at 12. 30 prof. Brane Senegačnik: New trends of interpretation of Greek tragedy + Emotion and cognition in Greek tragedy All the lectures will take place at the library of the Department of Classical Studies, ÚKS - Solniční 12, 1. floor)!! I apologize for the irregular rhythm of the lectures nevertheless I believe that the quality of them will be a nice reward.

Teaching methods
Planned learning activities and teaching methods consist of lectures, homework and reading of the discussed texts.
Assessment methods
Credits are awarded for the completion of an essay on a selected topic pertaining to ancient greek literature. The essay has to meet the standard formal scholarly criteria (use of relevant secondary sources, proper citations in footnotes, etc.) The topics of the essays will be specified at the last lecture session.
