Course objectives
The aim of this course is to introduce the student to the history of Britain's relatively recent past and present by considering aspects of national identity, social relations, education, political representation, the role of the media and related socio-cultural elements. These topics are presented through a series of lectures-cum discussions and examined by means of a written examination in relation to the relevant reading for the course. By completion of the course the student will be expected to have a relatively detailed understanding of the events, issues and socio-cultural trends related to the history of Britain in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
