- Course objectives
- In the seminar, students will be appraised with the most important historical works of the Roman Republic and the Principate. Legal sources, letters, biographies etc. will be read, as well. The seminar will focus on working with sources on the example of specific topics.
At the end of the course students will be able to work with the most important sources for the issues discussed, and draw conclusions independently. - Syllabus
- The environment of the Late Roman Republic: the optimates and populares; Sulla's reforms
- Pompeius Magnus: his "extraordinary" career in the context of the political life of the Late Republic
- Social strata in the Principate (senatores, equites, decuriones; the problem of liberti and familia Caesaris)
- The ways of integration of provinces under the Principate: service in the army (legions and auxilia)
- Roman citizenship, ius Latii (Latium minus, maius), ius Italicum; taxes
- Integration through urbanization: coloniae and municipia under the Principate
- Roman attitudes towards the integration promoted by emperors; Roman prejudice against foreigners
