- Course objectives
- At the end of the course students will be able to:
Define key notions from the field of visual studies and know its key representatives.
Be aware of the theories used for interpreting visual culture.
Interpret a broad range of imagery according to visual culture studies. - Syllabus
- 1) Introduction. What is visual culture? Art history and visual studies. Concepts of visual studies in the USA, Great Britain, Germany, France and Czech Republic. Concerning depiction – E. H. Gombrich. Prehistory of visual studies.
- 2) "A true image" and its historical changes. Mimesis. Visual representations of reality according to N. Mirzoeff and A. Gehlen. Analogies between mediums and bodies according to H. Belting. Theory of photographical and cinematographic image. Veristic painting methods.
- 3) Visual perception. Line, field and ornament. Theory of colors. The construction of picture space and perspective. Optical illusions.
- 4) "A visual language". Visual alphabets. Forms of a nonverbal communication. Research of gestures. The figurative atlas Mnemosyné by Aby Warburg.
- 5) Languages of art. The terms High (Supreme, Sacred, Beautiful...) and Low (Ordinary, Profane, Ugly...). Forms of artistic representation. New artistic media after 1945, their functions in modernism and postmodernism. A preventive kitsch according to R. Scruton. Meaning of images according to G. Boehm. Idea in art – concepts.
- 6) Theoretic reflections of urbanism, architecture and design, as well as their aesthetic and non-aesthetic functions.
- 7) Functions of image. Scopophilia/voyeurism and its feminist critics. Effects of synesthesy. Virtual reality and simulacra. The power of images and visual representations of power.
