Course objectives
At the end of the course the participants will gain a detailed insight into the functioning and transformation of the most important Roman public institutions (the Senate, magistrates, assemblies) from the beginnings of the Principate until the 3rd century AD, and the continuity of the tradition into modern times.
Syllabus
  • The seminary will focus on the changes that affected most of the public institutions at the end of the Roman Republic in the last decades of the 1st century BC. Political activities of Gaius Iulius Caesar Octavianus Augustus, "the first citizen", regarding the constitution, the process of transforming the old Republican institutions and their further life under the Augustan and the High Empire will be presented during the lecture. Finally, the transition from the Principate to the Dominate that took place already during the 3rd century AD will be outlined. A demonstration of working with the electronic databases run by the Department of Classical Studies which can be later used for teaching or self study will also be part of the seminary.
