Course objectives
An overview of the history of the Polish Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque literature and culture (from 10th till 18th century). The course contains information about the period, the literary epochs, trends, schools and authors, with an analysis of genres and specific works and also leads toward a knowledge of written forms of expression within the given issues. Main aims of the course are: - to understand development of the Polish literature of that period - to understand the most prominent representatives of the Polish Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque literature - to understand Polish literature as an integrative part of the building the national consciousness - to become familiar with an essential amount of scientific literature and its methods - to apply acquired knowledge and skills on the creation of own scientific texts.

  • 1. Literature in medieval Poland. Polish culture in the Middle Ages. Chroniclers and publicists. 2. Latin-Polish ecclesiastical prose. Latin-Polish ecclesiastical poetry. 3. Latin-Polish secular poetry. The close of the Middle Ages and the dawn of a new epoch. 3. Renaissance humanism. The culture of the „Golden Age“ of Sigismund I and Sigismund II. Polish-Latin poetry. 4. Poets of burgher origin. Marcin Bielski and other historians. The works of Mikołaj Rej. 5. Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski. Stanisław Orzechowski. Piotr Skarga. The prose of the reformation. Łukasz Górnicki and parenesis. 6. The poetry of Jan Kochanowski. 7. Poetry at the end of the age. 16th century drama. The language of Renaissance literature. 8. Baroque literature. The character of the Baroque culture. Baroque lyric poetry. 9. Historians and diarists. Historical epics and political satires. The works of Wacław Potocki and his contemporaries. 10. Moralistic prose and the novel. Baroque drama. The „Saxon Night“ and the dawn. The artistry of Baroque language.

Teaching methods
Lectures combined with seminar discussions, reading of recommended literature, homeworks, compulsory work with the e-learning environment of the Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University (ELF).
Assessment methods
Attendance (three absences are allowed), home reading, homeworks, essays. Completion: written test (3 questions, 5 points per each), two seminar papers (5 points). Minimum score of 12 points is required.
