Course objectives
Subject is dedicated to the resolution of so called Eastern Issue, namely to the events taken place in particular Balkan countries, and to politics of European powers. Within the framework of this subject the historical survey in the sphere of eastern issue has been presented, starting since the peace treaty concluded at Kuchuk-Kainarji in 1774 within the Congress of Berlin, mapping the uprising of Yugoslavian nations against Turkish Empire as well as course of trials to reform said empire, analyzing the ideas of Balkan federation as well as Slavic interrelations. Furthermore we analyze in details the negotiations at the Congress of Berlin and ensuing situation for Balkan nations. It specifies in detail the period between the Congress of Berlin and outbreak of the World War I, analyzing in details the Macedonian Issue and Albanian One, as well as the interpretation of events tending to the Balkan wars, which, in fact, represented the final resolution of the Eastern Issue. Course is focused to deepening of general historical knowledge of both history of Yugoslavian nations, and non-Slavonic ones of the Balkan Peninsula. Student should be capable to understand and explain the causes of ethnical tensions taking place in Balkan Peninsula, ensuing from the approach of European powers to the resolution of the Eastern Issue.

  • 1. Russo – Turkish and Austrian – Turkish wars and peace treaty of Kuchuk-Kainarji. Development in administrative system in European Turkey, Turkish economic situation and reforms done by Turkish sultans. Insurrection of rebellious Pashas. 2. Serbian insurrection and Greek crisis. Policy of European powers against the Turkish Porta. 3. First eastern crisis. Hatihumajun. Ideas of Balkan federation and Slavonic alliance. 4. Fight for Bulgarian church and Bulgarian insurrections. 5. Great eastern crisis and Congress of Berlin. 6. Progress in Macedonian issue. 7. Armenian slaughters and policy of European powers against Balkans in eighties and nineties of 19th century. 8. Ilinden uprising and Young Turkish revolution. Annexation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. 9. Albanian issue. 10. Balkan wars. 11. Conclusion: Consequences of European powers policy in Balkans for its further future. Residues of eastern issue nowadays.
