- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to introduce the basics of theory of phonetics and phonology and to teach students how to apply the knowledge in the contemporary Ukrainian. Student must be able to use phonetic analysis (transcription) of standard Ukrainian text and classification of Ukrainian sounds.
- Syllabus
- 1. Phonetics, contents of the subject. Place of phonetics among linguistic subjects. General characteristics of sounds. Speech organs and their functions.
- 2. Classification of vowels and consonants.
- 3. Assimilation and dissimilation of consonants in speech flow.
- 4. Simplification of consonant groups.
- 5. Lenghtening of consonants.
- 6. Types of transcription (phonetic, phonemic), transliteration.
- 7. Phonology, contents of the subject. Place of phonology among linguistic subjects. Phonetics and phonology. Differences between phonetic and phonemic view of the language. Conception of „phoneme“ and its variants. Phonological schools.
- 8. Alternation of phonemes (vowels, consonants).
- 9. Euphony. Orthoepy. Pronunciation of words of foreign origin.
- 10. Phonetic segmentation of speech flow. Syllables and dividing words into syllables. Dividing words at the end of the line.
- 11. Intonation. Stress.
- 12. Alphabet and graphics. Relation between phonemes and letters. Principles of graphics. Spelling. Principles of Ukrainian spelling.
- 13. Use of soft character and apostrophe. History of Ukrainian spelling. History of Ukrainian graphics.
