Course objectives
The aim of the course of French fonetics and phonology is to make students acquainted with the backgrounds of these parts of language studies and with the basis principles of orthoepy. Students should be able to define basic terms of phonetics and phonology. When analyzing particular texts and exercises, he or she should be able to apply these terms and deduce from the observed phenomena the proper conclusions in regards of relationship between French and Czech. At the end of this course, students will be able to deduce and explain the rules of basic phonetic and phonological phenomena and identify the deviations from the standard pronounciation. He or she will be able justify the usage and relations between graphemes and phonemes.
Syllabus
  • Basic terminology: sound,phoneme, assimilation, neutralisation, alophone, i.e. (see drill in IS).
  • Pronunciation; suprasegmental elements; accent, insistence, intonation; speech segmentation.
  • Dictation and corrective seminar.

Teaching methods
Lecture: exposition and definitions of basic terms and their exemplification on different types of specific text (recordings), proceeding from diverse registers. Seminar: application of theoretical knowledge on authentic texts (recordings). During their presentations students show their ability to interconnect on their own their theoretical knowledge and practical analysis of a specific text.
Assessment methods
Examination – written – test of theoretical knowledge. The successful completion of the dictation and readings is a prerequisite for sitting the examination. Seminar attendance is mandatory (80%).
