Course objectives
In this course, students will get to know some important narrative texts (tales, novels) of vernacular Chinese fiction. At the end of the semester, students will identify major developments in the history of Chinese fiction, as well as some important Chinese social and cultural values. First of all, they will be able to read such texts on their own.
Syllabus
  • the conception of fictional literature
  • "huaben" (criminal and love topics)
  • “The Women’s Kingdom”
  • the figure of Chinese hero
  • collections of anecdotes and wits
  • The order of readings will not be chronological, but will be made according to the difficulty of the texts.

Teaching methods
Classes are composed of reading and translation, group correction of the written translations plus a discussion based on the assigned readings. Discussion will be led by students.
Assessment methods
Attendance and participation is required and evaluated by 30%, students do hand in their translations (40%), final examination (30%)
