- Course objectives
- The aim of the seminar is to acquaint the listeners with the basic of phonetics and phonology, in particular: with the basic definitions of the branch, with the specifics of written and spoken language, with general rules ot the Czech orthography and their realization in the text, with the rules of orthoepy etc. Learners have to manage with the phonetic and phonological analysis of the text (transcription) and defining of the Czech sounds.
- Learning outcomes
- Having participated in the course, students will be able: - to describe and summarize the main features of phonetics and phonology of Czech; - to transcribe a Standard Czech text using the phonetic transcription; - to classify Czech speech sounds; - to explain and use in practice the acquired knowledge of Standard Czech pronunciation.
- Syllabus
- 1. Introduction. 2. Explanation of general definitions 3. Written and spoken language, general rules of the Czech orthography. 4. Orthoepy. 5. Phonetic transcription, its principles for the Czech language. 6. The classification of vowels, orthoepical problems of vowels. 7. Consonants, the classification. 8. Phonetic phenomena of continuous speech. Division of continuous speech, its means and consepuences. Stress. 9. The list of Czech phonemes, the methods of defining. 10. Alophones of segmental phonemes. Result of assimilation. 11. The phonological system of Czech, its relations. Correlation. 12. Phonological in Czech. 13. Morphonology in Czech.

- Teaching methods
- Hours are led partly as a theoretical lecture complemented by practical exercises. During individual analysis of a text students employ the information from the theoretical section and eventually master not only the theory of the field, but also gain practical knowledge in orthophony and orthoepy of the standard Czech language.
- Assessment methods
- Lecture + seminar. Exam requirements: active attendance in seminar, attendance (max. 3 classes absent). At the end of semester there will be written colloquium – test. Students are supposed to demonstrate their practical knowledge of phonetic transcription, classification of Czech speech sounds and theory.
