- Course objectives
- The course will focus on the genocide of the Jewish population in the Czech lands in 1939-1945. Students will get a review of the holocaust in Bohemia and Moravia and experience in working with sources related with this topic.
- Syllabus
- 1) Introduction to the topic and the archive institutions keeping the sources related to the holocaust with the focus on the territory of Moravia.
- 2) A brief history of the Jews in the Czech lands from the Middle Ages to the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
- 3) The Jews in the First Czechoslovak Republic; open manifestations of the racist persecution in the period of the so-called second republic.
- 4) The establishment of the Protectorate and the introduction of the Nuremberg race laws.
- 5) The "arization" of the Jewish property.
- 6) The advancement of the discrimination measures and the activities of the Protectorate government in the anti-Jewish law-making.
- 7) The formation of the ghetto Theresienstadt in connection with the so called "final solution of the Jewish problem".
- 8) Exterminatory camps in the occupied territory od Poland; the transports of the Jews from Bohemia and Moravia.
- 9) The comparison of the holocaust in the Protectorate and other countries occupied by the Nazi Germany.

- Teaching methods
- The course is carried out in form of seminars, where students present and discuss their essays.
- Assessment methods
- The classification will evaluate attendance which will be proved by signatures on the attendance lists. In the framework of seminar sessions, students will also have to prepare seminar work based on archive materials (approx. 10 pages long).
