Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce practical principles of textual criticism with special regards to medieval Bohemian manuscripts to the students of Medieval Latin. All aspects of preparation of critical editions will be explained to the students; at the end of the course students will have mastered the basics of working with medieval manuscripts, they will be able to work with a special programme designed for critical editions and will be informed about the necessary secundary literature (catalogues of manuscripts, history of Czech manuscript collections etc.)

  • Basic definition of textual criticism
  • Specifics of editing of medieval Latin texts with special attention to Bohemian manuscripts
  • Rules of transcription
  • Special features of medieval Latin ortography, pronunciation
  • Classical Text Editor – programme for critical editions
  • Quotations of authorities and their identification: biblical quotations, Roman law, Canon law
  • Electronic databases of medieval texts
  • Editing of diplomatic material
  • Particularities of medieval poetry

practical instruction – reading and collation of manuscripts, working with the Classical Text Editor; class discussion; short theoretical introduction
Assessment methods
Requirements for credit: active class attendance at seminars (75%) and conscientious preparation of practical assignments; students will be asked to hand in a minor assignment at the end of the course.
