Course objectives
The aim of this course is to acquaint students with the study of the origin and development of municipal books in the Czech lands and with the principles of critical editorial procedure. There is a focus on the development of municipal government and town offices, the function of municipal law and the judiciary.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, students will be able to understand the history of maintaining municipal books, their typology, the method of codicological and paleographic description and the process of creating critical editions. Attention will also be focused on individual aspects, such as the determination of filigree, training to read Old Czech texts and their transcription.

  • Introduction to the study of municipal books
  • The development of towns in Czech Lands until the end of the 16th century
  • Documents of a town office, classification and typology of municipal books
  • Municipal law
  • Editing principles and interpreting town books as an official source;
  • The typology of the most frequent entries in town books and how to interpret them;
  • Testamentary practice in the Czech lands during the Early Modern Age;
  • The agenda of the contested and uncontested judiciary;
  • Boskovice's commemorative book from 1484-1565 (1581) as an illustrative example of the function of a town book;
  • Recapitulation (a summary of the theory, a lesson on excerpts, reading entires in town books, and exercises in transcription)
