Course objectives (in Czech)
At the end of the course the students should have gained insight into the complexity of multilingualism and the many perspectives it can be studied and discussed from. They students should be able to understand and explain common myths about multilingualism and discuss phenomena and issues associated with multilingualism, including language attrition, code-switching, bilingual acquisition, bilingual advantage, and language policies. The students should be able to understand, interpret and critically evaluate scientific papers dealing with multilingualism.
Syllabus (in Czech)
  • The following topics are going to be covered: - multilingualism as multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary field - psycholinguistic perspective: acquisition, attrition, bilingual cognition, mental lexicon, cross-linguistic influence, code-switching -sociolinguistic perspective: ESL industry, language planning, code-switching, case studies: Singapore, the Czech Republic - and bits and pieces from neurolinguistics, research methodology, statistics, literary theory
