Course objectives
The course focuses on French cinema in the period from 1959 onwards. Individual sessions will introduce key directors as well as individual films; and offer insight into the development of economical, technological, production and theoretical background. The lectures begin with the emergence of the French new wave and focus on individual creative personalities throughout the following decades. Apart from particular directors the course will also introduce genre cinema of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s and concentrate on crucial generational, personal and aesthetic trends that dominated French cinema from the 1980s onwards (cinéma du look, beur films, la jeune cinéma, cinéma de banlieu, heritage).

This course is a follow up to the lectures focused on French Cinema in the period 1896-1959 (FAVk074), and complements the compulsory course on the history of world cinemas after the year 1945 (FAVBka09)
Learning outcomes
After completing the course students will:
- know essential French films, directors, actors and other creative personnel from the year 1959 onward
- be able to understand and describe the development of French cinema from the economical, technological and production perspective in this particular era
-be able to identify the main periods of French cinema in relation to wider cultural, political and social history
- know and understand key essays of French film theory.
