Course objectives
The course offers the opportunity of practical introduction to experimental research in the humanities and social sciences in the form of active participation. In this way, students are actively acquainted with the various forms of experimentation in the research areas of human cognition and behavior. In the lectures basic concepts and principles of this method are introduced and anchored in the historical context of the development of social and human sciences.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to:
  • to describe the course of preparation and implementation of the experiment with the help of correct terminology
  • understand the specifics of the experimental method, its advantages and limitations
  • link the historical context of experimentation development in social sciences and humanities with the current form of this methodology
  • distinguish basic types of experiments and their specifics

    • (2) Lecture: Introduction to experimental research methodology (humanities and social sciences)
    • (3) Lecture: History of experimental research (humanities and social sciences)
    • The dates of the contact meetings and lectures can be found in the detailed syllabus (Study materials> Organizational instructions). Except for these meetings, there are no regular lectures in the course, students receive individually sent invitations and calls for research sessions.

    Assessment methods
    For a successful completion of the course, you must earn at least 40 points:
    Points can be earned for:
    - participation in experiments (participation in one experiment = 16 points)
    - fill in (online) questionnaires (fill in one online questionnaire = 8 points)
    - final compulsory test in the exam period (minimum 5 points max 10 points)

    All research projects offered to students to attend are approved by the Ethics Commission. Participants have always the right to withdraw from participation in the experiment without giving any reason and without losing the right to score points for participation (in the case of questionnaires, withdrawal has written form sent to researchers).
