Course objectives
This course serves as an introduction to visual culture studies. It aims to familiarize participants with the basic terms and concepts for visual texts analysis, it introduces the key thinkers and the main theories of contemporary visual studies.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, the student will be able to: - characterize the milestones in the history of visual culture
- define the basic terms for visual culture studies
- know key visual culture thinkers
- choose from the theories of visual culture interpretation
- use selected ways of interpretation of visual texts

  • 1. Introduction to Visual Culture 2. The birth of images 3. Writing as a visual communication 4. Images and reality I.: mimésis, perspective, the myth of photographic truth 5. Functions and values of images 6. The Meaning of Images I.: Iconography and iconology 7. The Meaning of Images II.: Coding/Decoding and Ideology 8. Practices of Looking, discourse and power 9. Image and the Spectacle 10. Images and reality II.: massmedia, simulacrum, hyperreality 11. Commodification of the image, desire and popculture 12. Image, ways of reproduction and digital technologies 13. Seeing Science: models, maps, plans, visualisations, big data etc.
