- Course objectives
- The course is an introduction into the subject of Latin literature of the Bohemian Middle Ages from its beginnings to the end of the period (i.e. from the 10th century to the time of John Hus, or the Hussite movement). The course is divided into two parts. At the end of this second part, students will be able to describe the history of medieval Latin literature in Bohemia in the 14th century.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
describe the history of medieval Latin literature in Bohemia in the 14th century;
explain the influences of the classical tradition on medieval literature;
describe the connections of the 14th-century Latin literature of Bohemian origin with the development of Latin literature in Europe, as well as with the contemporary Old Czech literature;
evaluate the most significant representatives of particular genres of the 14th-century Latin literature in Bohemia;
analyze language and style of selected treatises. - Syllabus

- 2. Biography and autobiography.
- 3. Historiography (Zbraslav chronicle, chroniclers of the time of Charles IV.).
- 4. Education and didactic literature.
- 5. The so-called protohumanism.
- 6. Sermons.
- 7. Literature for entertainment. Exempla. Travel literature.
- 8. Secular poetry.
- 9. Religious lyric poetry (hymns, sequences, tropes, cantilenas).
- 10. "Drama".
- 11. Devotional and mystical literature.

- Lecture on the selected topics; discussion over selected works of the authors analyzed in the classes; reading of selected texts.
- Assessment methods
- Regular attendance and active class participation (min. 75%); final oral exam testing students' orientation in the literature discussed during both semesters of the course (10th-14th centuries); discussion over the work of a selected author.
