- Course objectives
- The course deals with film adaptations of literary works and is devoted to the relationship between literature and film in the wider cultural and historical context. After the introductory lectures, students will be familiar with the changes in the film adaptation of theory and new methods of research (a new concept T. Leitch, S. Murray, T. Corrigan, D. Andrew and others). In addition to formal analysis we will emphasize the interpretation of adaptation not only as a product, but we will focus on the process of its creation and function in the broader cultural and social, economic and historical context. The other part of the course, based on the interpretation of selected film adaptations, will be focused on Czech literature in the early sound film, a film adaptation in the Czech environment in the 1930s. Semantic and formal shifts during the transfer of literary works to the screen will be observed, but also the circumstances of the origination of selected film adaptations, their production and reception.Reading of literary works and texts focused on the phenomenon is essential to successfull accomplishment of the course. After finishing the course student will be familiar with wide range of theoretical approach to adaptation research: - will get the conceptual equipment of the theory of film adaptations, - will be able to understand the specificity of the relationship between literature and film, - will acquire multiple interpretation methods for adaptation research and will be able to assess adaptation in other ways than in terms of fidelity or infidelity to the literary artwork and interprets them better, - will be able to understand the film adaptations in a broader cultural context.
