An everyday communicative knowledge of German; the ability to read and understand normal texts in contemporary German. A basic overview of the older developmental phases of German. The ability to read and understand German texts in Gothic and cursive script. - Course Enrolment Limitations

- Course objectives
- Students will gain a broad overview of the state and developmental tendencies of Early New Higher German; Emphasis is placed on the graphic, phonological and syntactical area in connection with developments in the previous period in Late Medieval German graphics, capital lettering and German punctuation. They will work with both manuscripts and printed texts.
- Learning outcomes
- In practical assignments and work with texts, students acquire the ability to apply a theoretical knowledge in reading, transcription, analysis and dialectical interpretation of non-literary texts from the 16th to the 20th century. Students will acquire basic skills in the identification of the relevant linguistic phenomena, graphic and verbal as well as morphological, especially regarding the possibility of interpretation, including framework dating and recognition of the territorial provenance of texts.

- The state and developmental tendencies of Early New High German;
- Graphic, spelling and syntactic characteristics;
- Chapters on Late Medieval German graphics;
- Reading and transcription of non-literary texts from the 16th to the 20th century;
- Analysis and dialectical interpretation of older German texts;
- Basic determination of the territorial provenance of texts.
