Course objectives
The lectures will focus on understanding the history of Czech literature of 19th and 20th century within the context of Czech cultural and political history of this period. Considerable attention will be devoted to memoir literature by important writers and literary scholars. The students will also be given information on the phenomenon of Central European literature of 19th and 20th century which – in this geographical area – was often influenced by political events. After completion of the course, the students will have a better understanding of the distinctive position of literature and writers in Czech society since the beginnings of the National Revival up to the collapse of the communist regime.
Syllabus
  • 1) The dispute about the authenticity of the Královéhradecký and Zelenohorský manuscript: the history of the discoveries, the polemics concerning their authenticity and the influence on Czech culture of the 19th century. The progress of the dispute in the 20th century, reflexion in professional literature and fiction and fading out in contemporary society. 2) Memoir literature, correspondence, essays and fiction related to Czech society of 19th century. Karel Hynek Mácha´s diaries, memoirs of Josef Václav Frič and the correspondence of Božena Němcová. Literary and essayistic works by Vladimír Macura. 3) Central European themes in the 20th-century Czech novel: Jaroslav Hašek, Karel Čapek, Vladislav Vančura, Karel Poláček, Bohumil Hrabal, Josef Škvorecký and Milan Kundera. Social commitment of writers. 4) The overlaps of Czech avant-garde between1919-1948. Devětsil generation, surrealists, international contacts, influence on Czech culture of the First Republic period as well as socialist Czechoslovakia. Important memoirs related to this period.
