Course objectives
The course is an introduction to lexicology, dealing also with elementary methodology and terminology. Attention is paid to the delimitation of lexical units, their form, meaning and usage, to the structure of the lexicon and tendencies in its development. From the viewpoint of methodology, both semasiological and onomatological approaches are introduced. Lexical semantics is stressed, detailed information about lexical onomatology is offered in another course on word-formation. Traditions and present-day state of Czech lexicography is also dealt with in the seminar. The aim of the course is to provider students an overview of information about knowledge gathered by |Czech and foreign lexicology-orientated linguistics, to teach them basic skills in lexical analysis and in effective using of dictionaries.
Syllabus
  • The course deals with several wider topics:
  • 1. Lexicology, its stratification and position within other linguistic disciplines
  • 2. A lexical unit and its delimitation
  • 3. Lexicon
  • 4. Investigating lexicon: elementary methodology, onomatology and semasiology
  • 5. Segmentation of vocabulary: proper nouns and appellative nouns, autosemantic and synsemantic words, concrete and abstract words etc.
  • 6. Lexical meaning: theoretical approaches, possibilities of lexicographic reflections.
  • 7. Paradigmatic semantic relations structuring the lexicon (synonymy, oppositeness, hyperonymy - hyponymy). Syntagmatic semantic relations.
  • 8. Polysemantic units and homonymy
  • 9. Tendencies of development ion Czech vocabulary
  • 10. Lexicography and its development in the Czech context, an overview of various kinds of Czech dictionaries and their use in practice

Teaching methods
The course consists of seminars during which students learn to carry out a lexical analysis of texts, to use secondary sources of information and to work with various kinds of dictionaries of Czech. A part of their seminar assignment relates to theory and practice of lexicographical work.
Assessment methods
The attendance at the seminars is compulsory. The successful completion of the course requires the following seminar task: a/ the paper presentation on a selected type of a dictionary and possibilities of its using, b/ the lexicological analysis of the material intended for the Czech National Corpus, c/ working out selected lexicological problems /usually/ based on foreign literature. Requirements for the examination: the mastery of the course programme content, knowledge of the basic terminology and recommended literature. The examination is written. The test focuses both on the obtained knowledge and the ability of linguistic thinking.
