- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to introduce the students into the history of those Ancient Near Eastern states, whose history, society and culture were not discussed in the one-semester course History of the Ancient Near East I.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course the student will be:
- able to compare the development in Mesopotamia and Egypt, which was discussed in the first part of this course, with the development in Asia Minor, Syropalestine, by the Lake Van etc.
- capable of comparing the analogies and differences between the states founded by ethnics of unknown origin, the Semites and the Indo-Europeans. - Syllabus
- 1) The origins and development of the Hittite state, the merits of Czech science in the field of Hittitology
- 2) The Hittite society, mythology and culture of other kind
- 3) The states Mitanni and Urartu. Their continuity with Mesopotamian civilizations, new data on the capital of Mitanni. The appearance of the Urartian cities
- 4) The position of the ruler in the Hittite state, the kingdom of Mitanni and Urartu
- 5) The Aramean city states in Syria
- 6) The religion of the aforementioned states
- 7) The Phrygians and Lydians in Asia Minor
- 8) The origins and development of the Old Persian Empire
- 9) The rule, society, religion and culture of Persia
- 10) Indo-European nomads of the 1st millennium B.C.E. (the Cimmerians, the Scythians, the Sarmatians)
- 11) New discoveries of Czech egyptologists

- Lectures accompanied by theoretical training of students.
Seminar: reading and analysis of sources, discussion. - Assessment methods
- The final evaluation takes the form of an oral examination aimed at testing student's insight into the topics explained during semester.
It is necessary to prepare also single-handedly at home.
The seminary evaluation is based on homework, active class participation and the final test/seminary work.
It is obligatory to complete the seminar part first.
