Course objectives
The course focuses on the history of physical exercises, "sports" and games in ancient times from Hellenism. The aim is to familiarize the students with ancient physical exercises and education systems, individual gymnic, hippic and other types of agon in professional “sport“, athletes, coaches and others.
Learning outcomes
After successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- compare Roman and other ancient “sports" activities among themselves and with the present,
- compare with the present "sporting" spectators and different spectators' outcomes,
- understand some "sports" ideals and outcomes that had a strong influence on Roman "sport",
- understand some specialist terms,
- understand the rules of ancient disciplines and games and their changes in historical development in Antiquity,
- orientate in the primary sources and specialist literature dealing with this topic.
