Course objectives
The basic concepts of epigraphy, the development of Latin letters, institutions of the Roman state; epigraphic Greek; reading and interpretation of writings, primarily, sepulchral, votive and military; basic aids and their use. The basic concepts of numismatics; Metal of ancient coins and stamps of ancient world; Greek and Roman coinage
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be well versed in basic material sources; will be able to determine and describe a Greek and a Roman coin; to read and transcript an ancient inscription and expand its abbreviations.

  • Development of latin script.
  • Forms of latin names.
  • Institutions of the Roman state especially in the period of principat.
  • Cursus honorum.
  • Structure of the Roman army and the provincial-roman administration.
  • Basic terminology of numismatics.
  • Forms of legal tenders
  • Metal of ancient coins and stamps of ancient world
