Course objectives
The course introduces the issue of national minorities in the Czech Republic to the students. Each minority will be briefly presented from the historical, demographical, ethnological and social perspective.
Learning outcomes
After the completion of the course, the students will understand the terminology relating to national minorities, and they will be able to enumerate major national minorities in the Czech Republic. They will be able to have a good understanding of the historical and demographical development of a minority, its cultural and social specifics as well as of the scientific interest in it.
Syllabus
  • 1. Terminology - national / ethnic minority / majority, migration and foreigners, integration, assimilation and acculturation.
  • 2. Identical structure of explanation for each national minority: History – arrival in the territory of the today´s Czech Republic, coexistence. Demography – current composition, historical and current reasons for arrival, quantity as to statistics and qualified estimations. Scientific interest in a particular minority, internal composition of ethnic groups, identification and self-identification and their factors, own cultural models and the influence of the majority society on them, safeguarding, adaption and loss of the models. Society – civil coexistence, club life, presentation of the minority and its culture.
  • 3. Supplementing programme (e.g. a chat with a representative of a minority, a visit to an exhibition or event focused on national minorities).
