- Course objectives
- This course will introduce students to a wide range of relations between Romans and non-Romans/barbarians along the Roman frontiers from the last years of the Republic to the Late Antiquity, from the early encounters between Romans and barbarians to the spread of barbarians over the area of the Roman Empire. The partial objective of the course is to introduce and define the main customary types of mutual contacts, such as trade, political relations or war conflicts, and show a wider context of their development from mutual ignorance, hostility and suspiciousness to tolerance, acculturation, integration and transformation into a new Romano-barbarian culture and society of early medieval times.
- Learning outcomes
- After completion of the course, student will be able to:
- identify and summarize important features of Roman-barbarian relations
- define the basic characteristics of the Roman-barbarian interactions
- describe the full range of these activities from traditional categories such as trade, military and diplomatic interactions to transfer of ideas, cultural and social approaches, technologies, knowledge and skills
- apply the acquired knowledge about the Roman-barbarian relations within a wider social, political, cultural and technological context
- orientate oneself in progress, changes and transformations of Roman-barbarian relations on both sides of the Limes in a wider context - Syllabus

- 9. Roman finds in the Barbaricum, their influence, significance, position and impact
- 10. Barbarians in the Roman Empire (evidence of their status, image and perception by the Romans)
- 11. Invasion of barbarians, their progressive acculturation and integration
- 12. Late Antique transformation and formation of a new Roman-barbarian culture and society of Early Middle Ages
