- Course objectives
- At the end of the course students will be able to describe basic trends in development of the society in historical Czech Lands in the 17 and 18 century. They will be able to characterize significant elements of contemporary civilisation and compare specific forms of everyday life within particular components of society (monarchs, nobility, citizens etc.).
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course, a student will be able to:
- characterize significant elements of contemporary civilisation in 17th and 18th century and compare specific forms of everyday life within particular components of society - Syllabus
- Characteristics of the Baroque Period - basic tendencies and new directions in thinking, art, politics, religious and economic development.
- Status and the role of the monarch in the baroque society, Imperial Court in Vienna - function, structure, its influence on material culture in the Czech lands.
- Army - Changes in its functioning during the 17th and 18th centuries, the everyday life in the army.
- Infantry, cavalry, artillery - structure, armament, outfit.
- Nobility - changes in the status and structure of the nobility after the Battle of the White Mountain, types of noble settlements, their equipment, food, clothing.
- Daily life of Nobles - birth, adolescence, funeral, etc., the way of spending leisure time.
- Church - religious situation after the Battle of the White Mountain, the structure of the secular and regular clergy in the Czech Lands - everyday life, interior and architecture of the Baroque church and monastery - typical elements.
- Townspeople - types of cities in the Czech Lands, guilds and manufactories, structure of urban population. Way of townspeople's life, interior and arrangement of their houses, clothing, food.
- Subjects - relationships between subjects and their Lords, types of rent, manor farmhouse - ways of its management. Structure of the rural population, organization and interior of the village house, material culture, everyday life, food, clothing. Jewish minority - development and position in the Baroque society, making a living, daily life (birth, adolescence, marriage, death), religious tradition, material culture, interior of the Jewish house.
