Course objectives
The aim of the subject is presenting important works of general and Anglo-American theoretical linguistic literature and guiding the students to a comparison between the Anglo-American and the Czech linguistic traditions. Another aim is to deepen their knowledge of the methodology of linguistic research.
Learning outcomes
The students will become acquainted with important works of general and Anglo-American theoretical linguistic literature. They will be able to compare the Anglo-American and the Czech linguistic traditions. They will deepen their knowledge of the methodology of linguistic research.
Syllabus
  • 1. The works of Mathesius, Vachek, Firbas and Daneš and their contribution to the current research within English Linguistics. 2. Anglo-American lingusitic appraoches: N. Chomsky and hos theory of generative grammar. 3. Anglo-American lingusitic appraoches: M.A.K. Halliday and his functional systemic approach to language 4. Theory of meaning: Pragmatics, semantics, and sociolinguistics 5. Interdisciplinary approach to the study of language
