Course objectives
This course aims to familiarize undergraduates with the development of the relationship of state bodies to church institutions within the Habsburg monarchy. It deals with the search for a way to incorporate ecclesiastical institutions into the new, modern form of the state, deliberations over how to use or not use the bodies of the church to strengthen and modernize the apparatus of the state. It includes familiarization with individuals who created both the political and cultural background for all the discussions and administrative adaptations.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- describe the main milestones in the development of church administration in this period;
- analyse the level of intervention by the state administration in the development of administrative institutions;
- describe how the main administrative bodies of the church operated in the 18th century;
- name and chronologically order the main actors in church administration in the 18th century in the centre and in Moravia;
- assess the benefits of the administrative reforms for the establishment and development of a modern church organisation;
- write an academic study on the development of a selected church institution or church figure, with all the prerequisites of an academic paper.
