- Course objectives
- A basic insight into Finnish syntax is presented in the course. Students learn to analyze syntactic structure, recognize constituents of Finnish sentences and describe specific syntactic constructions (specific types of sentences). The acquired knoledge should help them also in practical study of the language.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of this course students are able to analyze Finnish syntactic constructions, can recognize nominal constituents and is familiar with the distributions of case forms in different syntactic roles. Students are also able to recognize specific syntactic constructions according to their form and function. They are able to use this knowledge practically, especially when reading and writing in Finnish.

- grammatical categories of nominals and verbs and their role in syntax (parts of speech)
- basic notions of Finnish syntax, types of predicates
- nominal constituents (subject in Finnish, cases of object, Finnish predicative, types of adverbials)
- basic sentence types (transitive, intransitive, predicative)
- specific types of sentences (constructions)
- infinitive and participial constructions
- exercises in Finnish syntax
