- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the basic map of literary genres of medieval Latin literature, its main periods, authors and treatises. Understanding medieval Latin literature and the general knowledge of it is the necessary prerequisite for grasping further cultural developments of particular literatures both medieval and early modern and modern. The course will focus on these connections and will provide general information about the intermediate features of medieval Latin literature. Special emphasis is placed on the most important cultural centers of Europe and the phenomenon of the so-called renaissance periods in the Middle Ages.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of this course students will be able to understand the continuity between the Ancient literary culture and the literary culture of the Middle Ages, or the Modern period. They will grasp the characteristics of this process based on particular medieval literary works of both European and Bohemian origin. They will be able to describe basic literary genres of medieval Latin literature and define their main features.
