Course objectives
The aim of the course is to understand to specifics of functioning of museum institution towards its internal and external public. Aims fulfilling is based on understanding to terminological and legislative Framework, typology of public services for museum visitors and possibilities of its empiric research. Through the development and applying of common knowledge to specific groups of museum audiences brings understanding to the difference in educational programms and materials preparation for each of group and capability to implement it in practice.
Learning outcomes
- summarize starting points, basic documents and actual state of approach of museums to the public;
- characterize several key groups in museum education;
- design adequate methods and approaches towards different visitor groups and models of museum visitors research
Syllabus
  • Introduction to museum work with the public, terminology and sources for the field of museum audiences.
  • Legislative, normative, ethic a kurikular Framework for museum activities for the public.
  • Empiric research of museum audiences – kvantitative and kvalitative methodology, types of realised studies.
  • Categories of public services for museum audiences.
  • Museums and education. Phases of preparation and realisation of museum education activities.
  • Museum visitor – specifics of museum visit and its impact.
  • Children as a group of museum visitors, specifics of cooperation of museum and school, family visitors in museums.
  • Adult visitors in museums.
  • Seniors as a specific group of museum visitors.
  • Museums and social inclusion. Visitors with special needs.
  • Museum professions – museum workers in the sphere of museum public relations.
  • Professional training and key competencies in museum work.

Assessment methods
Teaching of the course consists of lectures and presentations of student works to the topics of museum work with the public. During the course students prepare text and oral presentation of student team works to the topic. At the end of the course is oral exam.
