Course objectives
The aim of this course is to provide basic information about the two disciplines. Faleristics studies the development of orders of merit and other orders or decorations and their transformation in the Middle Ages and modern era. By studying members of orders and knightly societies, we gain a knowledge of social structures. In the vexillological part we focus on understanding symbolism or ideologies.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will have gained practical experience in the administration of faleristic or vexillological museum collections and a grasp of the social background of orders and societies.

  • 1) Basic concepts, terminology, faleristics literature;
  • 2) Great knightly orders;
  • 3) Orders of merit;
  • 4) 19th century orders and decorations;
  • 5) Historical and sociological aspects of faleristics;
  • 6) The Moravian nobility’s membership of orders;
  • 7) Faleristics and fine art;
  • 8) The principle of honours and the equality of citizens in civil society;
  • 9) Basic concepts and literature of vexillology;
  • 10) Medieval vexillological objects;
  • 11) Vexillology in the modern era;
  • 12) The symbolic context of vexillology

Teaching methods
The classes are divided into lectures and seminars in which documents from the collections of the Moravian Provincial Archive will be interpreted in relation to faleristics.
Assessment methods
Appraisal will be based on a short written work focused on particular issues in faleristics and vexillology. Assessment in the form of credit which will contain an analysis of the work and follow-up questions on the topic.
