- Course objectives
- Reading the classics of Italian literature In his posthumous esseay collections (1991) Italo Calvino questions the essence of calssics. Taking into account Calvino's question, the course will be devoted to the redding of contemporary writers who re-wrote some Italian literary classics, such as: Italo Calvino: "Leggere i classici", "Orlando Furioso" Guido Ceronetti: "Cantico dei Cantici" Gianni Celati: "Orlando Innamorato", Giacomo Leopardi (the visual infinity of photographer Luigi Ghirri) Giorgio Manganelli: "Pinocchio Parallelo" Linda Dalisi: "Aminta" Pier Paolo Pasolini: "Decameron" (film)
- Learning outcomes
- The purpose of this course is to acquaint students with the calssics of Italian literature through the reading of contemporary rewritings. Students will be required to read a selections of different literary texts. Students are guided to study the basics of tylistic analysis and to acquire ability to investigate the macro- and micro- textual levels of the literary works.

- Readings: Italo Calvino: "Leggere i classici", "Orlando Furioso" Guido Ceronetti: "Cantico dei Cantici" Gianni Celati: "Orlando Innamorato", Giacomo Leopardi (the visual infinity of photographer Luigi Ghirri) Giorgio Manganelli: "Pinocchio Parallelo" Linda Dalisi: "Aminta" Pier Paolo Pasolini: "Decameron" (film) During the course will be read also passages from the originals and from the volume Elisabetta Menetti, "Gianni Celati e i classici italiani" (2021). Each reading will serve as an introduction to the study of the writers’ poetics and of his historical and literary context.

- Teaching methods
- The course will be conducted in Italian. Literary texts will be read in Italian. Students will receive weekly reading assignments and will be expected to actively participate in the class discussions. Students are strongly suggested to attend the departmental seminars on Italian literature of Spring semester 2022.
- Assessment methods
- Attendance and active participation in class discussions. During the lesson students will be required to give an oral presentation on a text and author studied in the course. Final oral exam.
