Course objectives
The aim of the course is to introduce practical principles of textual criticism with special regard to medieval manuscript material of Bohemian origin. If focuses especially on the potential of digital methods of textual criticism and the digital philology. Students will acquire practial skills in textual criticism and will become acquainted with various approaches applicable to the reconstruction of the textual process of literary manuscript sources from the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to:
- describe various approaches of traditional and digital philology to medieval manuscript material;
- have an overview of selected methods of digital processing of manuscript material and relevant tools;
- understand the problems related to Digital Scholarly Editions;
- understand the issues of digitisation of historical resources;
- apply basic practical approaches to the reconstruction of the textual procecesses of medieval and early modern Latin, German and Czech written sources
Syllabus
  • Textual criticism and digital philology; introduction to quantitative methods applicable in textual and literary criticism;
  • Basics of practical textual criticism; selected methods (stemmatology, cladistics, phylogenesis, best-text and copy-text editing);
  • Digital Scholarly Editions and the tools; tools for analyses and possibilities of visualisations;
  • Digitisation of historical resources, description of manuscripts, TEI and other norms;
  • Recension and collation of manuscripts, reconstructing a text and a stemma of selected medieval Latin literary manuscript sources;
  • Multilanguage textual tradition: The case of the so-called Dalimil Chronicle;
  • Alexandr Stich and his linguo-literary method in comparison to previous concepts.
