Course objectives
Students should acquire the basic techniques of literary analysis in this course. This course is a follow-up to the general introduction in literary analysis (NJI_04), but extends the "pure" text work to include more interpretation and contextualization techniques. These are e.g. techniques of literature search, work with various sources (archives, digital sources, etc.) and the handling of simple scholarly texts in German studies. The students' interpretive skills should also be expanded to include techniques of narratological analysis.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will:
- be able to interpret shorter literary texts in a structured way,
- be able to formulate and justify interpretation theses on these texts,
- be able to search for sources on relevant topics,
- be able to handle simple scholarly texts in German studies.
Syllabus
  • 1. Applied revision of the "four-color" method practiced the previous course NJI_04 (situation of narration, content, form, imagery). 2. Structural / narratological analysis of short fiction according to Genette (narrator and figure speech, mode, focalization, time, space, etc.) 3. Source overview, research techniques using the example of a canonical text. 4. Range of interpretations, overview of literary interpretations. 5. Structural / rhetorical analysis of Germanic texts. 6. Structuring and formulating own interpretations of narrative texts.
