- Course objectives
- The students will be acquainted with selected terms in the field of translation and translation studies and with a brief outline of the development of approaches to translation. We will also focus in the the importance of competence in the target (Czech) language. The focus is on practical seminars (including translation outside of class) in the translation of literary texts, mainly poetry and prose, with the advice of an experienced translator, we will discuss different translation procedures and techniques.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course the student:
- acquire basic skills, including translation of factual, publicistic and artistic texts;
- will know basic literature on theoretical and applied translatology;
- will have a theoretical background and use the translator's procedures;
- will be able to work with specific texts and lexicographical works. - Syllabus
- Every class has this structure:
- 1. a brief presentation of selected translation problem, basic terms in the field of translation and translation studies,
- 2. team work on a Polish text,
- 3. reading of the translated text with comments.

- The course combines lecture, group translation of chosen text and class discussion on this text.

- Credit requirements: regular attendance (two absences are permitted without any penalty), home assignments (translations), participation in class discussions.
