The course is open to Master and PhD students. Lectures might be in different Romance languages (Portuguese, Spanish, Catalan, French, Italian) and English.

Course objectives
In this course you are introduced to the conceptual and technical tools used in the study of different fields of Romance studies: textual criticism, linguistics, history of literature, dialectology, history of language, etc. Every class focuses on peculiar topics. You will acquire basic knowledge in the field of Romance studies, but also get in touch with first-hand research and research methods. Since the topics dealt with change every semester, you can follow this course repetitively. The topic of the course depends on the research programme of the teachers and the guest lecturers. The lectures might be taught in any Romance language and in English.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course you will have a first hand idea of what doing research means, by attending to specialised lectures provided by highly qualified researchers in different fields of Romance studies; you will be able to deal with concrete problems and work with specialised bibliography and other scientific tools.

Teaching methods
The course consists of:
lectures provided by external guest lecturers, in any Romance language (the calendar will be published each time during the semester);
eventually, lectures, in a Romance language or in English, offered by theachers of the department.

Assessment methods
Preparation of reading assignment. You have to attend the 70% of the lectures at least and write one summary and/or essay (between 2000 and 3000 characters) within one of the topics that have been dealt with. In the case of an attendance to the lectures lower than 70% and anyway no lower than 60%, you will be asked to write one further summary on another one of the topics dealt with in the classes (between 2000 and 3000 characters).

This course, existing since 2016, offers the chance to both MA and PhD students to get in direct touch with the world of scientific research through the lectures provided by external guest lecturers, and get acquainted with listening to talks in any Romance language.

At the same time, it offers the chance to guest lecturers to have a wider and multidisciplinar audience.
Colleagues of the Department of Romance studies who wish to offer the lectures of their guest lecturers to this course, are invited to contact Paolo Divizia (paolodivizia@mail.muni.cz) and communicate: name of the invited guest lecturer, university or research institute affiliation, title and short abstract of the lecture, time and venue of the scheduled lecture. (No need to ask your invited lecturers to give extra lectures for this seminar; all you have to do is just opening the lectures you organise to this audience).
