- Prerequisites
- ZD_06 Math and Physics
In general, the secondary-school level of knowledge from the area of mathematics and physics is required. It is also assumed that student can compute the derivative and integral of a function, modify equations with logarithms, complex numbers and trigonometric functions, solve linear equations. A general knowledge of programming and computer skills are welcomed. - Course Enrolment Limitations
- The course is only offered to the students of the study fields the course is directly associated with.
- fields of study / plans the course is directly associated with
- Sound Design and Multimedial Technology (programme FF, N-ZVUK_) (4)
- Course objectives
- To give to students basic information about one-dimensional signals and systems with continuous and discrete time and to explain the concept of frequency spectrum of signal, frequency characteristics of system and the principle of analogue-to-digital conversion and signal filtration.
- Learning outcomes
- Student, who passed the course, is able:
- to distinguish basic kinds of signals, to perform basic mathematical operations with them,
- to compute and draw frequency spectra of periodic signals,
- to list main characteristics of systems, define their basic parameters,
- to classify frequency filters, to explain principle of signal filtration,
- to list and explain principle of basic analog modulations,
- to compare and highlight differences between continuous-time signals and discrete-time signals,
- to explain principle of signal sampling and reconstruction, to describe functions of the individual blocks of A/D and D/A convertors,
- to apply the required knowledge about the principle of A/D and D/A conversion to specific examples related to the digitalization of audio signals,
- to describe the Fourier transform using mathematical equation and explain its meaning,
- to define and calculate basic characteristics of a random signal,

- Teaching methods
- Teaching methods comprehend lectures and computer exercises. During the lectures, the theory is explained with the aid of MATLAB-SIMULINK models and solution of typical examples. The MATLAB software is used for computer exercises too. They are focused on solving practical problems from the field of signal processing.
- Assessment methods
- The final grade depends on total sum of points obtained during the computer exercises and for the written exam of the course. Student can get:
- up to 30 points for all computer exercises, during them student obtain points for correctly processed tasks and for the correctly answered questions of the final test.
- up to 70 points for compulsory exam, which has a written form and only students who passed ¾ of computer exercises, at least, and the final test can try to pass the exam. If the examiner has a problem with the evaluation of the written exam, he/she can put supplement oral questions to the student.
50 points is the minimum needed to successfully pass the course. - Language of instruction
