Course objectives
One-semester obligatory course for students of the Master Diploma in Translation studies programme, focusing on practical aspects of the translator profession and the tools used when translating, ranging from the traditional ones to the latest developments. Efficient use of the Internet and other sources of information, both factual and linguistic, is also part of the course. The teaching, based on teachers'(and translators') experience, acquired both in the Czech Republic and abroad, will point out the necessity of collaboration among translators and use of the latest technology. The course will draw students' attention to some of the translator guilds and provide useful advice and recommendation for the budding freelancer.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will be able to:
- work independently on the tranlsation market, as a free-lancer as well as an emplyee (regulations, taxes, workflow, marketing)
- stick to technical and formal standards of the field (typography, layout, communcation with agencies etc.)
- use on-line tools for looking-up and verification of information (dictionaries, corpora, online resources)

  • Using a computer, (ELF: Academic Typing)
  • Electronic dictionaries and other resources on CDs
  • Online dictionaries and sources of information
  • Corpora in translation into L2
  • CNK and other sources (Pravidla českého pravopisu etc.)
  • Sketch engine (examples of why you should use it)
  • Internet for translators - search engines
  • BootCat - terminology mining using texts from the web
  • CAT Tools - overview, comparison
  • Revision and proofreading
  • Collaboration with other translators, organizing your work, mental hygiene
