Course objectives
This course gives a basic orientation in historical, theoretical and practical problems of the notation of polyphonic music 1200 - 1600. It deals also with the problems of identification of various kinds of notation and with the ways of their transcription in present music notation.
Learning outcomes
The course HV_24b will equip students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills for independent heuristic and editional work with monophonic and polyphonic repertoire from the tenth through the sixteenth centuries as well as for its analytical and critical intepretation.
Syllabus
  • The subject is made up by following four thematic spheres: 1) Pre-Franconian and Franconian Notation 2) French Notation. 3) White Mensural Notation. 4) Critic of Musical Record. Detailed syllabus and indvidual thematic units and a list of corresponding literature in in IS MU.

Teaching methods
Class (1,5 hours per week); within the class a combination of teacher-led activities and student-centered group learning activities will be employed.
Assessment methods
The course is ended by an written and oral examen, success of which is based on: 1) Reriable knowledge of problems of historical development of notation within the historical stages given by the syllabus and lectures. 2) Reliable knowledge of principles of the studied notation systems and their transcription. 3) Reliable knowledge of basic literature on the subject. 4) Satisfactory fulfilment of the given seminar task. 5) Successful result of the exam test (transcription of ten bars of the drawn music example).
