Course objectives
The lecture course is devoted to the history of Czech and Slovak popular music. The course outlines a development of popular music throughout the history with a special emphasis to the distinguishing of serious and popular music spheres during the 19th century and to the tendencies of development of particular genres of Czech and Slovak popular music during the 20th century. The course also investigates various cultural, social and political circumstances as well as transformation of aesthetic criteria.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to define various phenomena from the field of the non-A music.

  • traditional popular music till the 19th century; Czech and Slovak popular music in the era of jazz, the beginning of the 20th century till the 1930´s; Czech and Slovak popular music in the era of swing, 1930´s - 1950´s; Czech and Slovak popular music in the era of rock´n´roll, 1950´s - 1970´s; Czech and Slovak popular music in the era of new wave, 1970´s - 1980´s; Czech and Slovak popular music in the era of electronic music, turn of 20th and 21st centuries;
