- Course objectives
- This is an interdisciplinary course designed as a broad-based survey to the culture and history of Italy, from Renaissance to Twentieth-Century. The course deals with major works of Italian literature and arts, invoking names such as Leonardo, Ariosto and Tasso, Michelangelo and Raffaello, Caravaggio, Bernini and Borromini, Manzoni, Fellini, among the others. While exploring Italy’s variegated culture in its social and historical context, is traced the building of the Italian nation.
- Learning outcomes
- Students will become acquinted with the History of the works of artists, writers and political figures, from Leonardo and Michelangelo to Fellini, and they will be able to place them and their achievements in a rich social and historical context.
- Syllabus
- Twelve lessons of 100 minutes each. Italian history from the 16th century to the 20th century. Main topics covered in the course: - Italy in the Renaissance: literature, arts and architecture - History, literature and arts during the Ancien Régime and the Age of reformations - Alessandro Manzoni, "I promessi Sposi" - The making of Italy - Italy during WWI-WWII - Italian cinema, a case: Federico Fellini

- Teaching methods
- Lectures. The course will be conducted in English. Literary texts will be read in English. Students will receive weekly reading assignments. At the beginning of the semester students will receive a mandatory reading list to prepare for the final esam.
