- Course objectives
- Knowledge of the history of Italian language from the Origins to the unification of Italy.
Part two: from 14th to 19th century. - Learning outcomes
- After attending the course the student will have a general knowledge of the development of Italian language along the centuries, with regards to literature as well and to all the theoretical discussions that go under the name of "question of the language"
- Syllabus
- The main topics of the course are as follows:
- - the linguistic situation in the Italian peninsula after 476 A.D.;
- from Vulgar Latin to Italian;
- - the development of the Italian language from its birth in the 9th-10th centuries to the early 16th century;
- - main periods of the development of Italian;
- - phonetic, morphological, syntactic and semantic changes;
- - previous stages of development compared to modern usage (including the Tobler-Mussafia law);
- - analysis of relevant texts from the Indovinello veronese to Bembo.

- Teaching methods
- Lectures (history of Italian language with contextualised reading of relevant texts both literary and practical; introduction of the subject focusing on problems and methods).
- Assessment methods
- Oral test and discussion on research materials. The exam includes the programme of the course + a manual such as that of Migliorini or that of Marazzini, and that of Patota for the core part of linguistics. Since the zapocet for History of Italian Language I has been awarded, with any exam, on the basis of these two reuirements (having passed the exam of Vulgar Latin, taught by Jana Mikulová; having attended the lectures in the second half of the Autumn semester), the exams includes also the topics taught in Autumn.
