Course objectives
The course will focus on official and non-official ecclesiastical and secular that a translator may encounter today. It will focus on methods of text identification and analysis, and on translation procedures that are appropriate for translation from and into Latin. The course offers the opportunity to work with a different type of text than those read so far, to apply the knowledge acquired in previous studies and to practice translating authentic texts.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course the student will be able to:
- identify the type of official or unofficial text ;
- work with dictionaries and other relevant tools for working with these texts;
- choose an appropriate translation procedure;
- produce a correct Czech or Latin text.
Syllabus
  • Lessons 1 and 2: historical documents of ecclesiastical provenance of both denominations (records in matrices, canonical visitations, records in registers, elogia, inscriptions). Lessons 3 and 4: secular historical documents (land records, school reports, appointments). Lessons 5 and 6: official documents of Vatican provenance (appointment and revocation decrees, papal encyclicals and pastoral letters). Lessons 7 and 8: official documents issued in the present day (baptismal certificates, marriage licenses, and confirmations of various kinds). Lessons 9 and 10: academic documents (diplomas, declaration, certificates of study and passing examinations, declarations, doctorates honoris causa, congratulation letters) Lessons 11 to 13: translation for the general public (tombstone inscriptions, memorial inscriptions, motivating slogans, dedications, inscriptions on medals and badges, tattoos, etc.).

Teaching methods
The course consists of an example and exercises during which students practice translating different types of texts. Homework and active class participation are required.
Assessment methods
Active participation in classes; continuous homework, translation of selected text at the end of the course.
