Course objectives
The aim of the course is to inform the beginners in philology with the place of linguistics in the system of humanities, to give a general characteristics of language as the subject of linguistics, to provide a survey of basic liguistic terminology, and to make the students familiar with the fundamentals of individual linguistic disciplines.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the students will be able:
- to define the subject of study of linguistics;
- to explain the main linguistic terminology;
- to determine partial linguistic disciplines as well as the contents of them;
- to apply this knowledge in the study of ancient and modern languages;
- to explain acquired knowledge in wider contexts.

  • 1. The place of linguistics in the system of sciences;
  • 2. the sign quality and the systematic nature of language;
  • 3. phonetics and phonology;
  • 4. morphology, grammatical categories;
  • 5. syntax;
  • 6. lexicology and semantics;
  • 7. stylistics;
  • 8. languages of the world;
  • 9. Indo-European languages;
  • 10. development of language, diachronic linguistics;
  • 11. etymology;
  • 12. linguistic typology;
  • 13. summary.

The course is taught as lectures. Colloquium: written test based on topics presented during lectures and discussed in the recommended literature. 65% of correct answers is needed to pass.
