- Course objectives
- The phonological, morphological, syntactic and lexical changes between the Old-, Middle- and Early New High German are presented. Some questions of pragmatics and extra linguistic aspects are also discussed in relevant contexts as well as the context of social history and the main topics of literary history or general text production of the respective periods.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon successful completion of the course the students willl be able to outline the most characteristic tendencies in the development of German especially between the Middle Ages to the Early Modern Period; identify and use relevant handbooks, dictionaries or lexica for working with texts originating in the respecitve periods; identify and characterise the epochs of German; analyse selected medieval and early modern German texts while respecting the specificities in form and meaning.

- Teaching methods
- The lectures provides the students with the overview of the language development from Middle High German to New High German. In the seminar work the students are practicing the theoretical information in the language analyses of Middle High German and Early New High German texts with main focus on phonematic and morphology and syntax specificities.

- written final test (terminology, phonology and morphology developments MHG - NHG, analysis of a short MHG text) oral exam (discussion of selected aspects of language development, a philological analysis)
